i came across a new story regarding repair about a week or so ago, and after some googling came up with this archived executive order from the first year of the biden admin related to stimulating small business, and among other things expanding consumer protections in regards to repairability. i think this was the original story: STATEMENT: Secretary of the Army calls for Right to Repair in Army contractshttps://pirg.org/media-center/statement-secretary-of-the-army-calls-for-right-to-repair-in-army-contracts/ ...i can't remember wher i found it. perhaps in a newsfeed. perhaps it was rossman repairs: https://www.youtube.com/user/rossmanngroup Anyway, here is the archived biden executive order. it looks like Biden was on the job as far back as 2021. There were a lot of worthwhile aspirations in this order: https://web.archive.org/web/20240305113948/https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/07/09/executive-order-on-promoting-competition-in-the-american-economy/ """ July 09, 2021 - The White House - Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy (archive): By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to promote the interests of American workers, businesses, and consumers, it is hereby ordered as follows: Section 1.  Policy.   A fair, open, and competitive marketplace has long been a cornerstone of the American economy, while excessive market concentration threatens basic economic liberties, democratic accountability, and the welfare of workers, farmers, small businesses, startups, and consumers... """ It's funny, i have no recollection of hearing about this order. i guess it got overshadowed by the Afghanistan withdrawal, and I don't seem to remember Biden really talking about small business and repair issues earlier in his first state of the union address. it is too bad that it seems people didn't notice the biden admin was fighting the good fight, at least to some extent, but even if a little tepid, i feel more optimistic about this approach than trump's style of trying to dictate the market and then just totally bungling everything(like we have seen this Spring). I wish more americans understood the concept of fair competition, and how it enables widespread prosperity(that is apposed to simply dictating prices or whatever is going on now). perhaps people do, but it seems like our elected officials don't really know how it works i guess. some related reading: Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton_Antitrust_Act_of_1914 The Clayton Act put restrictions on price-discrimination, exclusive-dealings(non-competes), mergers-&-acquisitions, and corporate-cross-directorships(maybe not applicable but this seem related to corporate-cross-ownership?), not addressed by sherman act: Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman_Antitrust_Act some more worth checking out: Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Trade_Commission_Act_of_1914 Robinson–Patman Act(1936) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson%E2%80%93Patman_Act (put restrictions on price discrimination) Celler–Kefauver Act(1950) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celler%E2%80%93Kefauver_Act ("Anti-Merger Act": this seems related to cross-ownership) btw, anybody know if christopher lischewski is still in jail? DOJ sure tought those tunafish guys a lesson they will remember. <:/ looks like he is out!: https://www.intrafish.com/people/former-bumble-bee-ceo-chris-lischewski-is-out-of-prison-but-his-plans-remain-unknown/2-1-1486770 it just seems strange that of all involved in the supposed HUGE Conspiracy, he was the only one to see jail, and correct me if i am wrong, but did chicken of the sea even get any fines? It seemed like DOJ was playing favorites pretty hard on this one. anyway, it looks like lischewski has got a nice new job, so maybe none of this even matters: https://www.undercurrentnews.com/2025/01/15/former-bumble-bee-ceo-lischewski-finds-new-food-gig-after-prison/ Still, while all this was going on, we had the pandemic and congress had some slap on the wrist hearing with Big-Tech leaders that never went anywhere(despite some pretty damning evidence and all sorts skeletons in closets - just read the internet). idk, maybe Trump will fix things... NOT! ...maybe i should expand on my assessment, and perhap i will write a book on the subject at some point, though for now i'll just say that i don't think it is his style to worry about stuff like this.
